Getting to Know Your Chime: Collection, Measurement and Musical Key

If you’re a Wind River chime owner, you may be ready to add another wind chime to make your outdoor symphony sound even better! But to find the perfect wind chime pairing for your existing chimes, there are a few things you’ll need to know.

This guide will show you how to find those details, so you’ll be ready to find the perfect musical pairing for your wind chimes.

Step 1: Identify Your Wind River Chime by Collection

You can determine which collection your Wind River chime is from, using one of these methods:

  • If you still have the box, look for the collection name printed clearly on the packaging.
  • For newer chimes, simply look at the windsail. The name of your chime will be etched there – for example, “Corinthian Bells”, “Arabesque”, “Arias”, etc.

  • If your wind sail doesn’t show the collection name, here are some other ways to identify your wind chime:

    • Corinthian Bells® wind chimes have thick-walled, powder-coated aluminum tubes, centrally suspended by one pin. The tubes are plain and smooth, and the dome at the top is rounded and smooth. The windsail hanging from the bottom is round and smooth. All the materials are powder-coated aluminum.
    • Arabesque® wind chimes have unique, elegant silver engravings on the tubes and dome. They too have thick-walled, powder-coated aluminum tubes, centrally suspended by one pin. The windsail is a fluted or grooved hexagon (6-sides).

    • Shenandoah Melodies® wind chimes are easily identified by the fluted (grooved) dome at the top. These chimes may have a wooden striker for smaller sizes, or a black polymer striker for larger sizes. The tubes are powder-coated aluminum tubes, centrally suspended by one pin.

    • Arias® wind chimes feature a redwood dome, striker and windsail. The dome is octagonal-shaped, and the tubes are shiny aluminum strung through drilled holes in a zigzag pattern. The wind sail is a trapezoid shape.

    • Festival® wind chimes feature a redwood dome, striker and windsail. The dome is smooth and rounded, and the tubes are shiny aluminum strung through drilled holes in a zigzag pattern. Festival chimes also come in powder-coated green or black colors. The wind sail is a teardrop shape.

Step 2: Measure Your Chime to Determine the Size

Once you know which collection your Wind River chime is from, you can measure the chime to find which size you have. To find your chime’s size, measure from the top of the O-ring (or hook) down to the bottom of the wind sail. That total length in inches determines the size of your wind chime.

Step 3: Discover What Musical Scale or Key Your Chime Is Tuned To

Now that you know the collection and the length of your chime, you’re ready to find the musical scale or key your Wind River chime is tuned to. Knowing the musical key of your chime helps you match tones and create beautiful duets or harmony blends.

Here are 3 different options for finding your chime’s scale:

  • Check the original box. Each wind chime comes with a tag attached, indicating the key of your set of chimes.
  • Find your specific wind chime on the website and scroll down to the “Product Specs” section. There you will find details about that specific chime, including “Hand-Tuned to Scale.”
