Wind River chimes are designed to create music from even the slightest breezes, but the sound will vary depending on the wind speed and direction.
If you’d like to hear more music from your chimes, here are a few tips:
Evaluate Your Chime’s Location
Wind River’s chimes are powered by the wind, so more interaction with the wind = more sound, and vice versa. Consider wind direction and barriers, like hedges, fences, and walls. If you want maximum sound, consider placing your chimes further away from your house and enclosed spaces, so the wind can have maximum contact with the windsail from all sides.
Adjusting the height of the hanging device may also have an impact, depending on wind direction and nearby barriers. Sometimes getting your chimes up higher will give them more access to the wind.
Check Your Hanging Device
Wind River chimes sound best if the hanging device itself doesn’t move, just the chimes. Ideally, the wind will catch and move the wind sail, causing the middle striker to strike the pipes so you can hear their glorious tones.
Sometimes if your hanging device ends up moving too, your chimes won’t actually ring because it allows the entire set to move, rather than just the wind sail.
Shepherd’s hooks for smaller chimes and reinforced hooks for all sized chimes work really well. Using rope or spinning hardware could keep your wind chime from performing at its best. The chime needs oppositional force to resonate, if the whole chime is moving in the same direction, it could be surprisingly silent.
Note: Even with a static hanging device, if the top piece is swaying and the pipes are hitting each other, then it’s time to find a new location for your chimes. Either a storm is coming or this spot is just too windy. In this case, hanging the chimes closer to a wind barrier is actually advised.
Consider a Larger Windsail
If changing locations and using the right hanging device don’t provide the results you’re looking for, then we recommend replacing the current windsail on your chime with a larger windsail. Windsails of all sizes are sold separately on our website, so you can quickly and easily get what you need.
We usually suggest increasing the size of your windsail by one size. So, if you have a Corinthian Bells 36”, then we recommend purchasing the Corinthian Bells 44” windsail. Oppositely, to decrease the sound of your Wind River chimes, you could move down in windsail size, too.
Once you receive your new windsail, here’s a how-to video with instructions for attaching your new windsail to your wind chimes.
